A Legacy of Learning

Siblings Sheilah Gulas and Tom Lingenfelter recall their childhood home as a hub of activity -- filled with students, community members, and loved ones, all touched by their parents’ generosity. Tom and Bev Lingenfelter had a love of learning, a tremendously strong work ethic, and an ability to find joy in life's simple moments. These were all lessons their adult children sought to perpetuate through the Tom and Bev Lingenfelter Scholarship Fund.

Originally established by Bev Lingenfelter in memory of her husband, Tom, the fund was renamed in 2024 by Sheilah and Tom to honor both of their parents after Bev’s passing. The scholarship fund will support graduating students from Southwestern Central School, a place that held immense significance for the Lingenfelter family.

Tom, born in Punxsutawney, PA, followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a science teacher. He worked at Southwestern High School for 28 years, where he also served as the Science Department Head. His dedication extended beyond the classroom; he was a US Army veteran, a fixture at school sporting events, and a mentor to many. Bev, also from Punxsutawney, married Tom and dedicated herself to her family before becoming the manager of the Southwestern Credit Union and later Southern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union for over 30 years. Her meticulous nature and genuine care for her customers built a foundation of trust and success.

Tom instilled a love for learning in his students and his own children, always ready with a camera to capture moments or a tool to fix anything. Bev was known for her kindness and dedication, remembering everyone’s name and everyone’s account number; always offering a helping hand. Both shared a love of adventure and an appreciation for travel.

“Sheilah and Tom hope this fund will inspire students to pursue their dreams, mirroring their parents’ values of lifelong learning, community service, and the importance of family,” noted Tory Irgang, Executive Director at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.

"Our parents instilled in us the importance of education, hard work, and giving back to others," Sheilah said. "We established this fund to honor their legacies and to provide future Southwestern graduates with the opportunity to pursue their dreams. We hope this scholarship helps them achieve the same opportunities that our parents helped so many others to reach."
