The Darren Manzella-Lapeira Memorial Run held on July 30, 2016, raised $12,000 to organizations directly impacting Chautauqua County’s veterans. This year, the Darren Manzella-Lapeira Veterans Assistance Fund, administered by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation; the Veterans Endowment Fund through the Chautauqua County Veterans Service Agency (also administered by the Community Foundation); and a scholarship at Brocton Central School received donations.
Darren, an Army medic and civilian, used his military experiences to assist countless veterans and service members in need. He was awarded a Combat Medical Award for courage in providing medical aid to wounded soldiers in Iraq. After a second Iraqi tour, he returned to the U.S. and began working with the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network in Washington, D.C. In 2011, he joined the Army Reserves, serving as staff sergeant in the Army National Guard. He worked compassionately at the Canandaigua Veterans Crisis Call Center, providing counseling only a former veteran can give. Tragically, Darren was killed in a motor vehicle accident in 2013.
